Programme

Turkish artists will hold sway at the 2006 FIFA World Cup™Fan Fest in the Glückaufkampfbahn on 2 July 2006.
This Turkish Day is our way of showing Turkey how welcome they are at the Fan Fest. Sadly, the Turkish team didn’t make it through to the 2006 FIFA World Cup™, even so, the City of Gelsenkirchen and emschertainment GmbH would like to offer this top-class cultural highlight to our many Turkish fellow citizens.

(An emschertainment GmbH event in co-operation with Gelsenkirchen World Cup Office.)

Mustafa Sandal  is one of Turkey’s most successful musicians. Born in 1970, he went to school in Geneva and then went on to study marketing in Boston, USA. His musical career began 10 years ago in the Gelism Studios in Istanbul where he composed and produced songs for various Turkish artists and was responsible for the production of albums by Ajda Pekkan, Zerrin Ozer, Aysegul Aldinc, Yonca Evcimik and Sezen Aksu. In a very short time, he became one of Turkey’s most sought after composers.

In 2003 Mustafa Sandal embarked on a further step in his career by re-recording his hit Aya Benzer in Germany with VIVA presenter Gülcan Karahanci, thus landing himself his first top 10 hit outside Turkey.

In the summer of 2004 and in cooperation with VW, Mustafa Sandal brought out an album in Turkey plus the title song of the VW Touareg campaign. The single, produced by Beathoavenz, was then re-recorded

by Sandal with GENTLEMEN. It had never been done before – oriental Turkish pop meets hip hop. These divergent music styles and cultures were merged into a unique combination. Mustafa Sandal is currently working on his latest album which is due for release this year.

Sümer Ezgü was born in Burdur, the second son of his family. He started playing the melodica and mandolin in early childhood and mastered the baglama, a traditional Turkish-Anatolian string instrument. His experience as lyrics and music composer, music editor and singer goes back over twenty-five years. In May 2004, Sümer Ezgü performed with Peter Bursch and his All Star Band for 10,000 spectators in Duisburg at a concert organized by the Deutsche Gewerkschaftsbund (German Federation of Trade Unions). Inspired by the event concept of 'Unser Europa' (Our Europe), the remit was to present Turkish folklore in both Turkish and German. While other artists sang or played guitar, drums or percussion, Sümer Ezgü was the only Turkish artist able to play the traditional Turkish baglama.

Since 1995 he has won several prizes and awards and has organized various international projects and concerts and would like to put together a world tour with a folklore and a symphonic orchestra and dancers. In the meantime, he is working on a laser and music stage show of Anatolian mythology. Direct interaction with his fans is important to Sümer Ezgü as well as providing a traditional music platform for fans and the public. He reads and will answer all emails and has a regular Internet column on  www.turkudostlari.net
